Why Losing Followers in the "Spammer Twitter Slap" is a Good Thing
I was on Twitter the other day and I saw a tweet come through that said: "I just lost over 400 followers,I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. Anyone else losing followers"
Although I hadn't lost followers at that point, I did the next day, over 500 followers. My first reaction was booo, I lost over 500 followers that I worked hard to get but it didn't take me but a second to realize this was a good thing....right? Losing followers a good thing? Weird!
Basically, Twitter did exactly what we wanted them to do. The got rid of the rif-raf, they slapped the spammers!
Twitter Slap: Here is why it was good to lose followers
Spammers Suck - A good portion of the spammers (hundreds of 1000's from what I hear) got what they deserved, the boot! Including one that would not leave me alone.....bye-bye saltydriod.
The Cream Rises to the Top - The people who use Twitter properly now have a chance to stand out and do what they do best....offer "good" to the Twitter community!
An Industry Standard is Set - Being a Social Media specialist, I am very aware of all of the Tom, Dick and Harry's that are using our powerful tools wrong. Now, people know that there is a consequence to their blatant disregard for improper use. Way to go Twitter!
Remember people, this happened to all of us, not just you. We all lost followers, the ones we really didn't want in the first place. A purified following is a good thing : )

Great article! It's so aggravating when you receive random followers.
I agree. Spammers suck. I didn't know twitter has taken such a strong ant-spam action. Kudos to them for trying to clean up the mess.
I wasn't aware of the spam problem. Glad they addressed it.
I don't think so this kind of things is happening that any one can loose there follower.
This was a good thing. I didn't lose any followers, because I had just done a "house cleaning" to get rid of all the bots, porn, and those who set their tweets for every minute of the day. It is just annoying to keep seeing someone post every minute.
I am pleased that twitter has taken such an action.
It's good that they are starting to do something about the spammers. They were getting so annoying.
I dont think that twitter done good.Spammers can do good.
Well as we all know that we can earn money from Twitter. Then people are trying to cheat them and increase their followers so Twitter has taken such an action.
I hate spammers too and I hope no one would like it. I agree with this article.
Okay Spammy McSpammster!
But now a days our in box is filled with spam mails which is useless but taking such action by Twitter is good to hear and just suggest all the other social networking sites need to take steps just like Twitter
This is a good thing. I am glad Twitter is doing something about spammers. I wish the entire internet could figure out how to get rid of them. Kudos to Twitter!
Although I haven't lost any followers, I wasn't aware that some of the users lost an enormous amount of followers. Assuming that the lost ones were spammers, I take this as a great news. Twitter has done an incredible job and I hope it will continue doing so in the future. One more thing I'll like Twitter to do is verifying the email ID at the time of registration by sending a confirmation link to that email ID. This may help a bit, if not more, in avoiding spammers.
BTW, thanks for sharing this news.
That was nice action taken by twitter and this action must be taken by all the other social networks so that no one can lose their friends and the followers.
Can't agree more. Spammers don't do much besides annoy...they are probably not reading anyone's tweets anyway.
Glad I happened across this post. As a relative newby trying to build my following, I couldn't figure out why followers were dropping off at such a fast pace. After reading this and other posts, I have to agree it is a good thing not to have to sort through those weirdos and just connect with the fun and informative folk. Thanks!
This article give me relief, i been using twitter last 3 months and after couple of weeks i found i was losing followers at least 40-50. But whatever happens, happens for good. Many social networking website didn't take this type of strong action against spammers. I personally feel that's why Twitter standing on TOP.
Thanks ! Nice article.
