Yes it’s true! I know it’s hard to believe for those of us that are zealous social medias fans, but some people still have doubts about joining the “new media” revolution.

Throughout my social media adventures, I have heard valid concerns, naïve assumptions and humorous objections, especially about the big player – Facebook.

Touting a database of 400 million and growing stronger every day, Facebook is not only the #1 social site; they are intent on rivaling Google’s empire. Facebook’s Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was featured in Fast Company, where he shared that Facebook “is a movement not a website”.

With Facebook’s staggering growth and let’s face it worldwide presence, will the following reasons hold enough validity to actually stop someone from joining this social media giant?

1. “I don’t need any more friends”: Really? Unless you have devoted yourself to a life of solitude this philosophy will not serve you well. As humans we not only need but crave interaction with others. Think of Facebook as a networking tool at your fingertips. Now the introvert can express themselves without being thrust into a physical crowd, the closet comedian can test his material before taking the stage or the new mom can stay at home and still stay connected.

2. “Facebook is for college kids”: In the beginning this statement was true but today could not be more off target. The fastest growing demographic in Facebook is 35 years old and up. It’s obvious that the Gen X and Baby Boom generation is quickly realizing the value of this phenomenal operating system.

3. “I am concerned about my privacy”: There are a few ways to look at this one.

If you are participating in technology and the internet, your privacy is already compromised. The reality is that we all leave a digital trail. Can we put systems in place to help protect us? Sure we can but we must not be naïve to the truths of cyberspace.

If you are engaging in social media for fun, sites (especially Facebook) have gone to great programming lengths to ensure that you can control your privacy. That being said it is up to you to review and control your privacy settings.

If your participation in social media is to build your brand and large networks of people, then you must embrace transparency. Be as you are! We all want to be surrounded by like minded people and the world is full of them. Facebook provides a digital platform for those connections.

4. “Facebook is a time waster”: Like this is the first item that has been said about. The same goes for television and video games. In all reality the product is not to blame; it is our own responsibility to set limits. If you are using Facebook for business there are many time saving tips and tools designed specifically for efficiency.

5. “I don’t care what someone had for breakfast”: That is what people say but it appears by Facebook’s success that people really do want to peek behind the curtain and see what you are up to. Granted if you are posting boring content and doing so way too often, people will stop looking. Add a little spice to your post, even if it is about what you just ate and the crowd will stay entertained.

Facebook is like a party. It’s a place to connect, share and have fun. If you still decide that you never want to join Facebook that’s ok, even without you or me the festivities will go on. With that being said, I plan on wearing my party hat for years to come.

tweetmeme_url = 'http://www.atiattractionmarketing.com/ati-attraction-marketing-blog/2010/2/15/naming-your-facebook-fanbusiness-page-5-hot-tips.html';

What’s in name? The answer is simple when you take it piece by piece.

Depending on what type of business page you are naming… it could be anything from the actual name of your business, to your personal name, to a trade, to a passion and so on.

When choosing a name, you must put some thought into it and play it smart. You will attract organic traffic from Google and other search engines based on the title of your page. Utilize the power of Google here!

Careful though, you must remember not to limit yourself by using words in your title that could become obsolete. No matter what name you choose, the following tips are all something to take into consideration:

1. Make sure it’s a name you like: As of right now, you can not change the name of your Fan Page so choose very carefully. Think long term...what name will best suit this page forever?

2. 75 Characters, including spaces: Not a lot of space, so use it wisely. Think to yourself, if someone were searching on Google for what my page has to offer...what might they type in the search bar?

3. When to use your actual company name:

you own the company or

your company allows* you to or

You KNOW you will never leave this company

     * keeping in mind they could change their policy at any given time

4. When to use your personal name: For anyone who is branding their self, we definitely recommend you do have your personal name in the title along with some descriptive words on who you are

5. Use Keywords! Google loves keywords, Google loves Social Media, Google indexes Facebook….need I say more? Carefully choose keywords, make sure to use words related to your industry that will always be relevant. If you are branding yourself, use descriptive keywords that will position you exactly where you want to be. Use words that you are passionate about, words that you strive to be.

It’s like building a house, go for the solid foundation and then build upon it. Take some time, check out these tips and let us know what you decided to title your page in the comment section of this post.

So, the Social Media phenomenon is front page news right now and everyone’s trying it. For that reason, we felt it was time to share a little observation we have made.

The “Social” in Social Media is what makes this new media so attractive. It’s what draws people to you and makes them want to connect and interact with you. Recently it seems that with everyone (including the most recent explosion…businesses) jumping on the bandwagon, there is some sort of confusion.

Please allow us to clarify and share some recommendations on “How to Be Social”!

Participate and Contribute – Get plugged in and “get it on” (old car dog lingo) with people. Try not to be the guy that only gets comments and never answers anyone back. People WANT to engage on these sites. Contribute good, accurate, funny or useful information on live feeds, groups, pages and lists.

Be Smart and Practice Good Manners/Etiquette – Be smart about what you post, these sites truly have become your online resume. In the wrong hands, this new media can hurt someone as fast as they can help someone. Practice good manners/etiquette such as; Happy Birthday wishes, good comments on others posts, congratulations, thumbs up, re-tweets, #followfriday recommendations, thank you’s, give credit where credit is due, help promote your friends family co-workers and the area in which you live etc…

Avoid Controversial Topics – There are plenty of places to view controversy! We recommend your Social Media presence does not become a place known for controversy. Avoiding the top 3 (Sex, Drugs and Religion), will help rank you as likeable.

Avoid Too Many Self Serving Posts – Spam is a big issue in Social Media, marketing your offer without permission is a bugger! Self serving posts/links should be limited. If you have something to offer, a product, a service, an opportunity or a business, focus on sharing good info related to that specific industry. This will help deem you as an expert in your area. We recommend 8 non self serving posts to every 2 self serving posts.

Be As You Are – We now live in a world of Personal Branding! The #1 recommendation we can make is be true, be genuine, be yourself. Users of this new media are very savvy to a fake. What makes you unique? Talk about it! Be who you are, talk about whatever it is you are passionate about…Become Your Brand!

Engaging with people is what fuels this new media. Now…go get your social on!!
