What are keywords? Keywords are the words people type into a search box when they’re looking for something online. The search engine uses the keywords to decide which web pages to deliver to you. That’s why keywords are crucial to your online marketing – use them in your content, title tags and Social Media posts and you can rank well on Google, Yahoo, MSN or any other search engine, ignore them and your information will rarely be found.

Why use keywords? They are a directory for the internet… they help your information be located. It’s all about ranking and being in the front of the line.

Keyword Strategies:

  • Include the most popular keywords in your content, including Social Media posts. This tactic is for customer expectation. (i.e. Nutrition, Jewelry, Scrapbooking, etc.) By including them, you lay a foundation for long term rankings.
  • Long Tail Keywords: Use the most popular keywords along with ‘qualifiers’, geographic, sector, etc… specific.

EXAMPLE:

“Dog Collars” this popular keyword will be used by many, so the competition is tougher

“Dog Collars Traverse City” helps ranking by targeting a location

“Retail Dog Collars” helps ranking by targeting business sector

  • Title Tags: Check out your competitors or mentors sites to see what keywords are effective.

Discovering Your Niche:

Reaching your market: Think about your target market and how to come at them from the side instead of head on. Let’s say that you sell chocolate that has a variety of applications. Start with a broad search of “chocolate” and see what populates.

What do the people want? People searching for the word “chocolate” might be searching for keyword phrases like “chocolate strawberries”, “how to make chocolate tuxedo strawberries”, “chocolate covered strawberries”, and so forth.

Ah-ha moment! You just found an angle to get traffic to your site. Rather than concentrating on the specific item you are selling like chocolate, you can use your keyword information to tap into the insatiable chocolate covered strawberry world. Get the idea?... let the creativity flow.
